Space between bars in bar chart

In a bar or column chart with more than one data series: is there any way to set the space between each bar (column)? Currently the bars are pretty close to each other, and if datalabels are enabled, there's not enough room for the data labels to appear for each bar. If there was a way to set the space between each bar, then this could be fixed...
