how to enter multiline input

How do I enter multiple lines of text?
i was hoping for something like shift enter or some other key combination

(even with the change suggested there, pasting multiple lines results in weird buggy behavior)

shift-enter would be amazing. but it doesn't look like the scancode for it registers.
