certain unit tests result in segfault (during cleanup)

running with chuck -s on either of these sometimes results in a segmentation fault during system cleanup

OS: Ubuntu (Windows subsystem for Linux)
cannot repro on other platforms (macOS Ventura, Fedora Linux @ ccrma)
note so far this seems to happen only on @nshaheed's laptop (intel, g++ v11.4.0)

running multiple times with --verbose flags

1. resulted in crashes at different points, all during cleanup
2. seems to reduce the likelihood of crashing
