Hello, I am wondering if ecw support could be added. I currently have ortho photographs in a virt raster, but cannot load them as the .ecw files are not recognized

ecw is a closed format for which you need to compile into gdal before being able to use it in QGIS. Quit a hassle, AND you need the user to present/accept a license.
Best (open) way forward: QGIS on Windows includes the ecw stuff, so you could maybe create one or a set of geotiff from your virt raster?
