If I provide a simple prompt like "Tell me a joke," simple-chat typically generates empty <think> tags, while llama-cli provides rich and explanatory content. However, for more complex prompts such as:

Using the numbers [19, 36, 55, 7], create an equation that equals 65.

Both simple-chat and llama-cli output detailed <think> content.

  • Operating System: macOS 15.2 (24C101)
  • Hardware: Mac mini M4 Pro, 64 GB RAM
  • Model: DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B-Q4_K_M.gguf

📈 Expected Behavior

The <think> tags in the output of simple-chat should contain detailed content, similar to llama-cli, to provide internal reasoning and reflection about the prompt.

🔍 Steps to Reproduce

  1. Build llama.cpp using Apple clang on an M4 Pro.
  2. Run the simple-chat example with a simple prompt like "Tell me a joke."
  3. Compare the output of simple-chat and llama-cli with the same model and prompt.

🤔 Possible Cause

There could be differences in how the conversation mode, sampling parameters, or template handling are initialized in simple-chat compared to llama-cli. My current understanding is that simple-chat might be skipping the internal reasoning output due to differences in configuration or prompt formatting.

🛠️ What I Need Help With

Since main.cpp (used in llama-cli) is significantly more complex than simple-chat, mapping it to a Swift wrapper is challenging. My goal is to implement this reasoning mechanism in my Swift wrapper while maintaining simplicity.

  • What specific configurations or initialization steps in simple-chat could be missing that cause the <think> output to be empty?
  • Is there a minimal way to replicate the behavior of llama-cli without requiring the full complexity of main.cpp?

Any guidance on how to bridge this gap or simplify the reasoning functionality would be greatly appreciated.
