What to do if you get safety warnings

Blomblo edited this page May 9, 2024 · 6 revisions

If you have come here; you have probably gotten warned by SmartScreen when trying to download or run run.bat. Don't worry, it's safe. You can look through all the code if you don't trust my Easy Usage Script or YT-DLP as they're both open source.

If you've used version 1 previously, and are wondering why that one didn't give you a warning. It's because you made the batch file yourself (with my code), while the new version(s) are batch files that I have created.

Every time you update run.bat; you may encounter these warnings again.

Obligatory safety warning: Please make sure that you trust programs before running them, there is a reason that these warnings exist! If you are unsure of if a program is trusted or safe to run; please search its name, and check what the general consensus is. If you're still unsure, or if you want to make sure that it's safe, you can use something like VirusTotal (I am not affiliated or sponsored by them). Note that these types of sites tend to give a few false positives. If the program is open source (like this project); you can check through the source code.

Here is v2.3 of run.bat on VirusTotal, if you don't trust me; upload the one that you downloaded.

How to skip or remove the warning(s)

There are different types of warnings that you may encounter, but here are the ones that I encountered:

“run.bat isn't commonly downloaded”

Fix - Right-click the file or press the three dots, then press Keep.

“run.bat isn't commonly downloaded”

“Make sure you trust run.bat before you open it”

Fix - Press Show more, then press Keep anyway.

“Make sure you trust run.bat before you open it”

“Windows protected your PC”

Fix - Press More info, then press Run anyway. This fix may not be permanent (for that file), if it comes back; check the next problem/fix.

“Windows protected your PC”

“Windows protected your PC” (previous warning)

Fix - Go to the file's properties, then make sure that Unblock (1) is checked, then press Apply (2).

Open properties tab Unblock from SmartScreen

If you encounter another warning

Please create an Issue with the steps needed to recreate them so that I can update this page
