But this causes the front end to display an empty System message.
This doesn't not update saved state yet, but the messages in the chain won't see the empty messages

This relates to langchain-ai#294 in langchain-ai/opengpts. This is an initial attempt to fix the
add_thread_stateAPI but it is probably not right as I am not sure why it even worked, but I wanted to start a discussion so this PR allows me to show the differences.
